Johnny Bristol - I Wouldn't Change A Thing

June 27th, 2009

Favorite after favorite - Johnny Bristol is one of my favorite soul artists.

I used to hear the Coke Escovedo version of “I Wouldn’t Change A Thing” in the break / bboy circles for a few years, until I realized I had the original version on wax (on the album “Feeling The Magic”). The Bristol’s piece of work certainly belongs to the soundtrack of my life. “It feels like there’s a party in my ears and everybody’s invited!”

Midsummer: Alchemist - Smile

June 18th, 2009

One of my favorite producers, Alchemist, is about to finally release his new “Chemical Warfare” album (7/7/2009).

The visually amazing video “Smile” made itself to the traditional Midsummer playlist (Btw. “In Sweden, Finland and Estonia, Midsummer’s Eve is considered the greatest festival of the year”). Have a nice festival!

Diz Gibran - Impossible (+ Feist - Intuition)

June 12th, 2009

Do you know the kind of songs that give you no choice but to put them on repeat time after time?

I don’t even remember the last time it happened - before this one. Diz Gibran’s (thanks for the tip, Freshmen) masterpiece, “Impossible”, really speaks to me on the thoughtful side. The song is based both musically and lyrically on Feist’s “Intuition”.

Also, the original by Feist is definitely worth listening to.

PS. The whole “Soon You’ll Understand” album by Diz Gibran can be downloaded free and legally from here.

Red Bull Music Academy (London 2010)

June 2nd, 2009

Once again it’s time for the Red Bull Music Academy, which takes place this time in London, 2010. The RBMA team chooses a selection of 60 most promising artists to get down with some serious creativity.

I was blessed to get in a couple of years ago (Toronto, 2007) and I have to say the 2 weeks are like living in a paradise. In Toronto we had tutors / lecturers like DJ Premier, Jake One, Ommas Keith (Sa-Ra), Arthur Baker, Georgia Anne Muldrow & Dudley Perkins (Stones Throw) and Dabrye. Wow.

In a nutshell, Academy is all about making music with huge equipment selection in various studios and taking advices from the experienced ones. All this comes with good catering and live shows every night. The 60 chosen ones get this everything for free. Some of the earlier “students” include e.g. Flying Lotus, Aloe Blacc and Oddisee.

The application period continues till 27th of July, 2009! (Application form )
