Slept On pt. 3 - The Last Emperor

August 29th, 2009

The Last Emperor has kind of belonged to the “best kept secret” list, although he has been signed to Rawkus, Aftermath and Interscope labels. If you didn’t already know about the talented Last Emp, you might want to check out his “Music, Magic, Myth” album (2003).

So, what happened to the promising Rawkus deal? I managed to recall and dig his interview I read a few years ago:

“Anyone who knew about Rawkus during that era would know that I had to respect a lot of their artists at the time. I respected Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Kool G Rap. It just seemed like the ideal label for the sort of hip-hop that a person like myself desired to put out.”

“They began to tell artists that they wanted to compete more with what was going on with mainstream radio and the mainstream acts that were out there. They didn’t want to be viewed as the underground backpack hip-hop label.”

“Instead of giving me a concrete answer to when my album or single was going to come out, they would tell me ‘We’ll figure it out but we have to get you a personal trainer so that your abs and your pecks are nice and tight.’ This is literally verbatim. The administration at Rawkus actually told me this. Everyone would flip when I would tell them that story.” -Last Emperor (original source)

Oh well, that’s the way…

DJ Shadow - This Time

August 27th, 2009

A friend of mine reminded me about the Post-Entroducing time of DJ Shadow in the form of the wonderful “This Time (I’m Gonna Try It My Way)”. I had heard the song, but I didn’t know about the video, which takes the whole song to the next level.

PS. Who would create that kind of video for my next project?

Slum Village is back and the new album is on its way! There was supposed to be some reunion things with Baatin, but the tragical news hit in the end of July. R.I.P. Baatin.

Baatin shines on the new video, while Elzhi and T3 enjoy in the background.

The Freshest Kids

August 18th, 2009

Recently, I watched the bboy / hip hop history document “The Freshest Kids” from the beginning to the end for the second time. It was as impressive as it was at the first time. The 95 minutes long document includes perspectives from e.g. Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa and Rock Steady Crew members. Here’s the whole document:

Large Professor feat. Nas - One Plus One

August 16th, 2009

Large Professor, known from the legendary Main Source, has finally managed to release “The LP” album. “The LP” was originally supposed to be released in 1996, but the label, Geffen, dropped the project back then.

In 1993, Large Pro finished his A Tribe Called Quest (Keep It Rollin’) verse with the famous phrase: “Queens represent, buy the album when I drop it”. However, his debut album didn’t see the daylight until 2002.

Loop Troop - Four Elements

August 10th, 2009

Somehow, I ended up going thru the music I used to listen around 2000. This Swedish song by Loop Troop & Petter was on heavy rotation around those times.

Zion I - Bird’s Eye View

August 3rd, 2009

The California duo Zion I dropped the “Mind Over Matter” album in 2000, containing classic songs like Critical and Silly Puddy (feat. Grouch). “Bird’s Eye View” from the “True & Living” (2005) shows that their newer stuff is also worth checking.
