The Art of Sampling 2.0: Thru You

September 27th, 2009

In case you didn’t already know, I’d highly recommend to check out for Thru You, a project of an artist called Kutiman. The idea is that he samples different YouTube clips of separate instruments and creates full songs out of them in a pretty creative way.

Kutiman - I’m New

Another favorite is “Just A Lady“.

(Thanks for reminding me, Illphraze.)

Lord Finesse vs. Percee P (1989)

September 22nd, 2009

The flows in this back in the day clip (1989) of Percee P and Lord Finesse battling are just amazing. After 20 years, today’s upcoming MCs don’t really seem to get on these levels with their outcome. Let the video speak for itself.

(Found it thru Chairman Mao’s blog.)

Masta Ace & Edo G - "A&E"

September 16th, 2009

Attention all the Masta Ace listeners: did you know Ace & Edo G have an album called “A & E” coming out on October 6th? The EMC fella reveals his thougts about the industry at this brand new interview by UGSMAG.

“Long gone are the days of major labels giving you quarter million dollar budgets to make your record, then $400,000 to promote and market your record.” -Masta Ace

Last time when A & E collaborated on Edo G’s and Pete Rock’s “My Own Worst Enemy” album, the result sounded like this:

Raekwon - OB4CL2 & MoSS

September 10th, 2009

Raekwon managed to finally drop the Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. 2 album, which features production by RZA, J Dilla, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre, The Alchemist… And MoSS.

Jake One tweeted recently that the Toronto-producer MoSS (worked with Slum Village, Black Moon, Kool G Rap, Sean P, Ghostface…) did not get his credits right on the album:

“BTW my hommie MoSS did the Raekwon with Beanie Sigel song on OB4CL2. Didn’t get his credit on the album. The story was he gave them the beat like 5 years ago and they couldn’t figure out who did it. Seen that happen a bunch of times actually.”

It reminded me about how my good friend Jonny Wanha noticed his beat was used on a Jim Jones album with wrong credits…

Anyway, the album carries on the tradition of the first Cuban Linx. It was hard to pick one feature song for this post, so this time you have to do it yourself.

Found this old Rakim interview, let the video speak for itself.

El Michels Affair & Wu-Tang

September 4th, 2009

Altough someone mentioned me about this one earlier, I have to admit I’ve been snoozing on it for a minute. A funk / soul group called El Michels Affair made an LP full of Wu-Tang instrumentals. The Affair really handles the vibe without breaking the vision of the original Wu songs - they’ve even performed together.

A thank you goes to my friend Hatsolo (Flow Mo) for reminding me about the LP.

Golden Age in English!

September 2nd, 2009

From now on, let’s take it back to the Golden Age in English. Most of the earlier content is translated, so there’s a tag cloud archive showing previous posts (on the right side after the lifestream).

I hope it’s cool for all the Finnish readers as well!
