Term freestyle has a lot of different meanings. It can be spesific style of sports like skiing, swimming or wrestling. But what it is in breaking?
I had a nice conversation about it with Tuff Tim Twist(RockSteadyCrew). He pointed out that when freestyling you always did something that you have never done before and created something new everytime you threw down. For me thats a great definition for word freestyle in breaking. I also found out that instead of being totally free,it´s easy to just rely on existing moves and use them in free or random order.
On the other hand history of word freestyle in Rap offers another view on the subject.
“There are two types of freestyle. There’s an old-school freestyle that’s basically rhymes that you’ve written that may not have anything to do with any subject or that goes all over the place. Then there’s freestyle where you come off the top of the head”
“A lot of the old-school artists didn’t even respect what’s being called freestyle now… any emcee coming off the top of the head wasn’t really respected. The sentiment was emcees only did that if they couldn’t write. The coming off the top of the head rhymer had a built-in excuse to not be critiqued as hard”. -Kool Moe Dee, 2003, There’s A God On The Mic: The True 50 Greatest MCs
